Default OT: Web Hosting?

Hi All,

My former web-site, www.itee.uq.edu.au/~kootsoop, is now an ex-web-site
[no parrot jokes, please].

So I'm looking for a decent place to host a domain name and the
frequency estimation pages (amongst others).

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Any pointers gratefully received!

Ciao,

Peter K.

Hi Peter,

This is more than you're asking, but I'm thrilled with my account
at hub.org. You get an entire virtual (BSD Unix) machine, shell access,
and your own web server (Apache). The rates depend on the amount of
disk space you desire and the traffic per month, but I think they are
pretty reasonable (I think the most cost-efficient is about $100/year).

I've no personal experience, but the following appeared in
"The LangaList Standard Edition" 2005-01-27
http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2005/2005-01-27.htm#3

"
3) Hosting Follow-Up: One Year Later

Almost exactly a year ago, I moved the Langa.Com site to
http://www.trkhosting.com/ ; an affordable, high-quality web hosting
service. The owner, Tom Koch, is an extremely knowledgeable guy who's
bent over backwards to keep the Langa.Com server humming--- not an easy
task, given the huge mail load that flows through the server, and the
feast/famine cycle caused by the twice-weekly appearance of this newsletter.

There have been glitches--- there are with any web host--- but I've
never seen anyone work as hard to make things right as does Tom. He's
the diametric opposite of the lazy, bored, disaffected techs you so
often run into at hosting sites.

If you're unhappy with your current web host, or even if your just
getting started with a web site (Tom also has free tutorials for people
just getting into web hosting), check it out:
http://www.trkhosting.com/ . Highly recommended!
"

I've found Mr. Langa's comments useful and reliable. YMMV

I've found lately that there are any wide variety of services available at a
wide range of prices.
I'm using iPowerWeb for a client and it seems to offer a reasonable range of
things (I needed ftp and, believe it or not, ftp is not offered by many
website hosting companies).

Thanks to all (Randy, Richard, Fred) for the input.

I'll investigate all these options, plus a couple I've found through
other avenues.

Once things are up and running, I'll let you know where the frequency
estimation pages are again.

Ciao,

Peter K.

Hi All,

For those with any interest, it seems my ISP decided to improve its
free web offering, so I'm going with:

http://home.comcast.net/~kootsoop/

as my home page.

The Frequency Estimation pages are avaiable from:

http://home.comcast.net/~kootsoop/freqalgs.htm

Please be patient with any broken links!

Ciao,

Peter K.
