Dear Vivek,
Pl check the following:

(A) If the CF that you use is a revolving disk type. Then you ensure that you give enough power ON settling time prior to first access.

(B) Check whether the bad blocks count is mounting. If so, you need to add sufficient bad block management.

(C) Ensure that before you switch off the device all the write operations or cache-back writes are flushed and close completely. You may use soft power off that checks all these before switching off the power to the CF.

(D) Check the initial inrush current taken bu the CF is managed by your CF host port. Else it could have created a dip on the power and thus the reset to the CF port could not have synched with the power to CF.

(E) Check the timings between power rise and the reset active/inactive to CF together. This might give a clue whether at time CF is not reset during power ON.

Subject: [SI-LIST] Compact Flash Hang

Dear All,

Iam using a compact flash (Type 2 device) used for booting and running
my application software.

I boot and run the application sw from the Compact flash(CF) and then
switch Off the system after testing.. Please note that the CF is
always plugged in.


Over a period say testing my system 500 times , the system just hangs
when i boot it again and we need to restart the system.The screen
suggests that there is no device to boot.Iam able to see the other
devices detected by the system.
Please note that this behavior happens only sometimes after using the
CF over a period.

Can anyone give your comments on the above behavior?. What could be
the problem while using the CF over a period of time.

Hello Manickavelu,

We are operating the Compact flash at 5V.

Also the signals from CF(compact flash) is interfaced to the processor
via IDE interface.
The Processor is running at 3.3V level and CF at 5V. I have checked
the voltage compatibility. This seems to be fine.

But refering to the CF Spec, we see that the Voltage sense pins VS1
should be grounded for reading at 3.3V and VS2 open.

But we have left both the pins open.

Please can you comment on this based on your experience whether this
will be a issue.
