SI-List:
Over the past several months many si-list subscribers have probably
noticed that there have been a number of postings by a few tool vendors
announcing SI related seminars or webinars. Conspicuous by their
absence, other vendors have refrained from posting such programs to the
list.
In response to an off-list inquiry I thought it would be good state the
current list policy regarding the announcement of free seminars/webinars
and the like.
I consider these activities to be learning opportunities for the SI
community. This is distinctly different than products or tools. It is
recognized that these activities put on by tool/hardware vendors are
motivated in part by the desire to bolster sales and influence
customers. As long as that motivation isn't blatantly obvious it isn't
an issue.
There are some eminently qualified SI Gurus who do hold SI classes as
part of their primary business. In these cases a very short
announcement of the existence of new or improved content may
occasionally be made (for the most part these presenters adhere to very
professional business practices and I wouldn't expect any list
conflicts)
In order to 'level the playing field' so to speak I wanted to announce
that vendors putting on the no-cost learning activities may post
announcements of these activities to the list without violating the 'no
commercial postings' rule provided:
1) The postings stay to a technical description of the
activity (i.e. they aren't thinly veiled marketing ploys).
2) That the vendors restrict themselves to a reasonable
number of postings of these events (a few postings prior to a scheduled
event is OK, daily postings for a couple weeks would be discouraged).
The above 2 points should just about cover the rules. If any vendor
wishes to post info regarding an upcoming learning opportunity and has
questions regarding any aspect of the list rules please feel free to
contact me off-list to discuss.
Likewise, if list subscribers see a problem with the above, feel free to
discuss it with me, though postings of the sort addressed by this note
are most expeditiously dealt with by depressing the delete button if
they bother you.
Enough administrivia.... Back to the tech discussions.
