Default video decoder

hi to all!
while searching for video decoder i came through this site.actually i
am looking for a video decoder if any1 can suggest me something. i am
in need of a video decoder for which the input is continuous stream of
data from a video camera and the output is frame by frame pictures in
digital output format.the decoder should be compatible for both analog
as well as digital input.
thnx!

There are quite a few video decoder chips available. I'd suggest you
have a look at the Philips SAA7115 or the Conexant CX25836/7. Both
these devices will digitise NTSC, PAL or SECAM and squirt out a
BT.656 datastream. A google search for BT.656 will also be productive.

Most video decoder chips are horribly complicated devices, although
some have "automatic" modes that allow operation with the minimum
amount of effort. Usually they're programmed using I2C or similar.

Cheers

The description of your needs is contradictory. The video our of most
cameras is unencoded, frame by frame. It would help if you understood
the formats you discuss and the terms you use. Keep talking.

Hi suruchi81,

We use the TI TVP5150 decoder in my project at work. We're also using
the TI TMS320DM642, so the two make a good matching pair. TI also has
example video drivers for this part, so it's hard to go wrong with
this chip if you're using their platform.

I don't know much about the Philips chip Mark mentioned - maybe it's
better in some respects.

The TVP5150 wasn't suitable for our application because it has a truly
awful lock time (of the order of tens of fields). Not good if you're
switching between non-genlocked sources. Otherwise, it looked fine and,
as you say, has good software support from TI.

Cheers
