There is always groups.google.com. The downside is that you need
a valid email address to register, and you can't scramble that address
in post headers.

Easy enough... Create a free account and don't bother checking it.
Put a note to that effect in your posts.

Jerry - why? SuperNews has been GREAT for me. I pay $3.95/mo for
unlimited text groups.

I posted that (and this) via Google, but I find it too hard to follow
a thread here. It doesn't keep track of what I've already read.

I switched from SuperNews when they soldout to GigaNews and the spam and
trolls when way up in the groups I watch to news.individual.net -- they
too are inexpensive and almost as good as SuperNews (hmmmm...maybe as
good as, now. I'll have to think about that a bit). The don't carry
the binary groups. (or didn't the last time I looked.)

Try:-
<http://www.individual.net/>
I have found that my software "Kontact" handles the streams from them
reasonably well and it is easy to follow threads.

Just thought I'd add to the discussion that panix.com will
still sell you a shell-only account for $100/year, with
mail and news, so that you can use your preferred older
UNIX shell-based newsreaders, and they are committed news
admins who are not going to discontinue/degrade their feeds.
Jerry, I use Outlook Express to handle my newsgroups through
<groups.google.com>. It keeps track of all messages read (non-bold type) and
unread (bold type). To make the messages easier to read, Google up "OE
Quote-fix" and install it; make a desktop or task-bar icon of OE with Quote-fix
installed, and use that to start OE every time. Works great! I have had no
spam as a result of using Google Groups.

I've found that Tera News is slow about starting to let you post
anything - it takes a few days after you start an account there.
Maybe that's why Google Groups is so friendly to spammers - they block
the spam from reaching their own users, even though Google Groups seems
to be the most frequently used newsgroups server for posting spam to the
rest of Usenet.

Probably because Tera News is cheaper (only one $3.95 payment
for a currently indefinite use, and with a limited access to binary
newsgroups included). They're somewhat slow about starting to
let you post anything after you start an account there, though.

I thought about them after bellsouth.net dropped most of the binary
newsgroups, but they don't offer any of the binary newsgroups
bellsouth.net dropped. Looks like a cheap place to get text-only
newsgroups, if you don't trust the free text-only newsgroups
providers such as:

I'm happy with SuperNews, too. I use it with Thunderbird. Works great,
price is right. I started with them years ago, because relying on any
home ISP was no good since I travel a lot.

You did respond to that verification email didn't you? Posts won't show

I paid a $3.95 sign-up fee and no monthly at all. The server is
free.teranews.com and that allows me 50 MB/day (headers don't count)
download and unlimited upload. Now if I could only post! (I'm working
on it.)

Well, if you can't post, you got ripped off.

Martin,
How does one use groups.google.com as a news server rather than as a
web-based news program? I'm in Google right now, but in a web page
where I have to use their format.

I never had trouble using news.rcn.com as a news server from anywhere.
I'll move my web site soon. Now that they RCN doesn't offer news
(binaries too) I have no reason to pay their highish price. A cheap
site host plus a cheap ISP will cost a bit less. Only spammers and
IEEE know my real email address anyway, so a move won't impact my
correspondence.

Apparently, it's just a matter of time. I wish I hadn't had to find
out the hard way.

Sounds like my account ar Tera News. It took me a day or two to
be able to start uploading posta there, but then it took a few more days
for them to start doing anything with the posts I uploaded.

My apologies to all! I just checked my server's DNS and found that it is
<news.comcast.net>, which is my ISP on cable. I was flat wrong, thanks to
rising dementia (it has reached my chin and is headed for my eye-teeth).
I was using Google Groups and I had exactly the experience you are having -- a
web page. I switched to <news.comcast.net> so readily and reliably that I
simply forgot that I made the move.
