Hello Guys,
Thanks for all of the comments. I haven't really followed IROC for years,
but the situation arose. Bob McCarty who shoots for IROC is the webmaster
for my photoclub, so he invited me to come shoot some IROC stuff. Very Cool!
So Jerry, he takes credit for the fast loading and for most of the shots on
the site. He was nice enough to put up three of mine. I happened to already
be at the track on call, so basically I take a lot of pictures during the
event. My actual work is handled rather quickly days before the event - I
just need to be available during race time. I did have one little emergency
right before the race today , but it was quickly rectified.
Some of comments from last spring's event indicated some of my images were
too static (I concur), so I played around with various shutter speeds until
I found the combination that gave me a solid car image but provided blurring
on the wheels and background. This time around I was shooting with a camera
that was up to the task of autofocusing and high speed shooting of cars at
180 mph and with an image size of 12.4 megapixels. I even did some shots at
1/8000th of a second which stopped even the wheels. The individual lug nuts
are completely resolved in these high speed shots. But the ones with motion
blur are in general more acceptable.
Taking pictures for IROC is way easier than for NASCAR. I got plenty of
NASCAR shots during the practice and in the pits before the race - but
during the race only a few photographers are allowed to take shots
trackside. Everywhere else the viewing is obscured with safety fencing,
light poles etc. To get a "photo pass", one needs a letter from the editor
of an accredited media outlet stating you are taking pictures for the
newspaper/magazine etc. And this must be arranged pretty well in advance. So
I need to find such an editor. The tracks don't allow for independent
photogs :-(
Thanks for looking,
Clay
p.s. Rick, one of the local tracks allows for spectators to bring their
personal cars onto the track for drag racing. You could bring your civic.
But actually Eric is correct in that at some of the SCCA events, quite a few
civics are raced quite successfully.
