Re: Hello, are we still here somewhere? Slightly OT
Hello Fred,
I see the same thing you noticed about Google dropping comp.dsp. My news
server always seems to be a bit screwed up these days. So that is why I
haven't posted much recently.

Hi Fred,
Google news seems to have had some kind crash - most groups have
vanished from its selection. So, I'm trying the news server from my
university, see how long this one keeps up.

not really (regarding google). when i was with viconet (back in the
NJ days) their newsserver thought it was posting when it really
wasn't. it was a big pain in the ass just to convince the sysadmin
that it wasn't working. finally persuaded them to post to comp.dsp
and check DejaNews (before google bought 'em up) and that was 1/2 the
battle.

Google Groups is working fine for me. at least at the moment.

Andor,
Yes, comp.dsp on Google groups seems to be back up now.
news.freenet.de still seems to be down.

Well, right now many of the threads on Google comp.dsp are listed but
unreachable. Not this thread but many others. So, there are still
problems.... Seems really a shame that the resources seem to be
slowly disappearing. I guess worms took their toll recently - which
might only be transient.
I questioned the service I get from Centurytel and someone was kind
enough to explain that providing news is relatively expensive in
hardware and bandwidth. It seems that nobody cares that much because
there's rather large traffic in files - images and such that have
limited redeeming value perhaps?
At any rate, on Centurytel I see lots of recent threads that start
with "Re:", meaning that the OP is missing as well as other messages
no doubt. This has been going on for well over a year now. It
happened for a short time and then was fixed. Then it came back to
stay it seems. Makes the service pretty useless. As free services
become useless, do the for-pay services look more attractive? I
wonder what a world-wide system that is 100% paid would look like in
terms of participation? (And here I thought I was already paying for
it).

I'm posting through google because it's free and I can use any computer
I have access to... the downside is the absurd amount of time from I post
to I see the post in the archive, and that I can't mess up my posted email
address. I haven't been in my office for some time, where all the emails
and spam gets stored, so I am a bit anxious to find out what awaits me...
As for paid services/alternatives to usenet, I think there would be a quite
limited audience for such fora. During the time I have been active here, I
think there have been on the order of 20-25 regulars. I think it's just
enough to keep the ng going. There is something like 10 to 12 threads
active every day, and that's not a lot. If you restrict access or disperse
the activity to several fora, the spirit of comp.dsp would probably
suffocate pretty soon.
