Default determining CFAR scaling factor

I am choosing a peak in a signal from a microphone using CFAR. Throug
trial and error I chose a scaling factor that gave me good results. Thi
works well on Windows, but on the Mac it seems I need a much lower scalin
factor. Are there any secrets to choosing a scaling factor? I feel like I'
poking around in the dark.

What are you scaling? You should get a pretty uniform behavior if yo
scale the mean, or median, or some other statistic of the signal. So if yo
set the threshold to c*m, where m is the moving average of some length, yo
should get the same peaks on Mac or Windows (assuming the signals diffe
only by a constant!)

Above, c is the scale factor, same in either case (Mac or Windows). Just
to clarify...
