Default Cell phone to cell phone data connection...possible?

Hey guys,

Do you think it's possible to get a cell phone, hook it up to a
laptop, get another cell phone, hook it up to another laptop. Then have
one phone dial the other, and set up a data connection, whereby the two
phones can "talk" via hyperterminal or something like that....is that
possible?

Any ingenious ideas?

If I remember correctly, then the Bluetooth specification contains
one profile for such a scenario. Thus you might be able to do it with
phones which support BT.

GMRS will let you make IP connections between them. Requires GSM phones
and data service (such as plans offered by T-Mobile and Verizon).

The bluetooth path might work, but the cell radio will not. In short, cell
phones transmit/receive on non-overlapping frequencies, so one cell phone's
receiver cannot tune to a different cell phone's transmit frequency.
Basestations are setup in complementary fashion to receive/transmit with
cell phones, but not other basestations. This applies to both CDMA and GSM
based phones. Hope this helps...

Yes. Most phones look like serial modems to the software.
You talk AT commands to set up the link and then you
basically have a serial connection between the endpoints.

Hyperterminal will work, but it has a few amazingly stupid
features. The right kind of sequence on the serial line can
reprogram the menus or even lock the system. Try Terraterm.

Now the bad news. Depending on your operator and contract,
your phone may not be able to receive data calls. There is
normally a special phone number to call a phone in data mode.
Talk to the network operators.

Kind regards,

Iwo
