Engineering is the art of making what you want from things you can get.

Unfortunately if one looks for "DSP Companies" one ends up with a rather
narrow search. The problem is that while there are a great deal of DSP
applications there are few companies that consider themselves to be "DSP
Companies" -- probably 99% of the DSP work that's done in the world is
done by sonar manufacturers, or radar manufacturers, or video gizmo
manufacturers, or sound card manufacturers, etc.

This is a problem when one is trying to search for any enabling
technology like DSP, control systems, embedded software, etc.

I suggest that rather than looking for companies that do DSP by asking
if they do DSP, you should look for companies that do DSP by:

(a) considering what sort of products would likely use DSP and
looking for companies that design those products.

(b) looking at want ads for DSP engineers -- here in the US you can
look at old newspapers in the library, going back quite a ways.
If you have that service available to you locally it may help a
great deal. When looking for something narrowly focused like
DSP then going back several years can help you to characterize
which companies need DSP people on an ongoing basis rather than
finding a company that just needs one DSP guru and a bunch of
regular ol' software engineers.

(c) asking around, which is what you're doing here, and who knows --
maybe it'll help.

Hallo Arul,

DSP is very broad field and I don't know what project you want to do. I
you are clear, then its very easy to find companies regarding that
Anyway, in general if you want to look about what products ar
manufactured by what companies (in INDIA) you can have a look at
www.ipfonline.com (or) www.industrialproductsfinder.com
I hope that you are also aware that most of the multinational companie
are also located in india.

I have two suggestions:
one for which I'd expect no negative comments from the group
one which I'd expect ??? / HUMMM / might actually work ;)

First, take a one semester (or whatever standard short course length in
India is) in formal "business English". Your initial contact with any
potential employer is likely to be written. You get only *one* chance to
make a *GOOD _FIRST_ IMPRESSION* . [ I'm assuming that essentially all
engineering positions in India use English as a common language. There
are several people in the group who can correct me as required. ]

A more controversial idea:
[ CAVEAT LECTOR: I started a BSEE 09/1961.
Haven't completed yet.
There is hope as I know
one who started a BA when over 60 and
had a classmate who started his BS at 70 ;]

Choose a DSP processor you like.
Find someone who knows both you and a rep for product line.
Have acquaintance write factual *not over hyped* letter of recommendation.
Send it and a letter explaining why you would be an asset to one of his
customers. This requires some chutzpah [ Google it ;] , but might prove
productive.

I once got an interview because CEO wanted to meet anyone who would
claim AND support my employment history -- eclectic to say the least ;)

Here are some suggestions from me:

1] Localize you search. There are some listings available at relevan
STPs(Software Technology Parsk) like Banagalore's ITPL.It might be a goo
idea to localize your search to a town/area/building etc. when you ar
doing your hunt. You might soon end up with with 50-60 companies this wa
that DO DSP. 5-10 out of them might encourage you.

2] Use resources like NASSCOM to search the directory of al
software/design services in specific verticals. These may yiel
non-localized results.

3] Select a DSP chip manufacturing company(use your bias.If I were you,
would use TI.TI is big in India and in the word market)and find it
partner companies that work with them. These are most likely in India t
be pure play embedded/DSP design or software services companies.

( ex: http://www.ti.com/asia/docs/india/partners-list.html

-yields about 50 odd companies straigh away)

4] Talk to your professors and seniors. If you are from tier-2, tier-
college, do talk to tier-1 college(Like IITs, RECs etc.) professors an
ask for their suggestions. DO take time to visit Indian Institute o
Science, bangalore ECE department and talk to students there for thei
views.

5] Find out deatils about University program coordinators working i
various DSP/DSP-like chip manufacturing companies(TI, ADI,Freescale
Intel, ARM, Tensilica, Extensa, Broadcom,Toshiba,Infineon etc.) and get a
appointment with them through mail. Talk to them and seek their help i
polite yet resolute manner. Most would oblige. It is their job to.

6] Find out University focussed last mile companies that work as bridge
between Product companies like ADI and Universities. They are likely to b
best placed in knowing about correct fit for you demands.

To ensure that you are not bumped off by companies for a wron
approach(you dont get a second chance, as many told you already), you ma
need to ensure the following:

-Know what you want.

-If you dont know DSP, you may not want be as bold.

-Companies tend to be very formal and procedural when dealing wit
Universities and their students, as professors may not appreciat
companies taking decisions without consulting relevant professors
Especially in those companies where established University programs exis
like in intenl, TI etc.

-Carry a recommendation letter/endorsement from your University on you
demands.Yes, first you need your university, your professor supportin
you.

-Do some initial research and develop a design document on what yo
propose to do. Companies are more likely to give projects and assit
precocious students than uplift mediocre students with enthusiasm. Its
fact and be ready to show case your skills. Hint: Companies are awaly
impressed to see good documentation and design skills.

-English language communications skills(often wrongly labelled a
communication skills) are over rated and over-emphasized;Your englis
language communication skills need to be effective enough to showcase you
logical and engineering skills effectively in a brief manner always.Yo
will pick up nuances of western business or communication skills along th
way.

Hope this helps.
