View Full Version : specifications of broadcast quality video standard

08-23-2005, 06:56 AM
Hi,
I have seen references saying about broadcast quality videos. Does it
denote a specific:
1. resolution
2. bitrate/framerate
3. IBP sequence

Is there some more references available regarding the same on the
web???

Please do help.

TIA.

Maybe you should be more specific.
For example the IBP sequence refers only to MPEG, not to things
like ITU656 or ITU601 or similar.

Try one of the NAB handbooks (for North America info)

(National Association of Broadcasters)

It is about 3.5MHz video bandwidth at 30Hz or 25Hz frame rate.

Note that this is considerably better than standard VHS,
especially at the EP tape speed.

You can convert that to digital resolution values if you want.

It's less than broadcast quality, though. That extends to 4 MHz.

Well, I did say "about"...

For monochrome, or with a good comb filter I agree with 4MHz.
Otherwise, you run into the chrominance signal around 3MHz,
so 3.5MHz on average.

As far as I know, VHS is closer to 2MHz, maybe 2.5MHz.
That seems to be good enough for most people.
