I suppose that you are right, so rather than focusing on a very
specific topic
that is too advanced for your mathematics background, why don't you
read
up on some linear algebra and probability?

Most textbooks in digital communication or stochastic signal
processing
have introductory material. Have you read any? Does your book have
an introductory section or two?
