I didn't read your entire post, but the winner is Marconi. He used
antenna arrays and tuned the phase response to get very basic
beamforming. So there you have it: a multi-input, multi-output
*wireless* system from about a hundred years ago. As for the first
MIMO wired system, I would search for the first one within engine
control systems.
