Hi Laura,
This isn't quite what you're asking for, but could be useful. Zwicker
and Fastl's "Psychoacoustics: Facts and Models" (second updated edition)
has some information on the human auditory system as well as an entire
chapter on hearing aids. Additionally the chapter "Applications in
Audiology" contains a subsection titled "Speech in Background Noise."
I haven't read the material but it could be worth a look.
