waveform generator - need help designing

I need help with a design challenge that I need to complete but, I am clueless on how to start. Here are the specs:

Wave Shapes: Rectangular, Triangular, Sawtooth, Sine, . . .
Minimum of 16 samples per Period
Frequency Resolution: 16-Bit, linear
Output Frequency Range: 0 – 50 kHz
Amplitude Resolution: 10-Bit
Shape and Frequency PC programmable

The goal of this project is the realization of a programmable waveform synthesizer, where
both the wave shape and the frequency can be selected from a host PC. All these has to be designed using Quartus II and with Terasic TREX C1 Multimedia Development Kit (Altera EP1C6Q240C8 ).

If anyone has any suggestions or can point me to some examples I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Tom
